THE INITIAL RATINGS for Second Time Around were not great, but they were strong in the under-thirty demographic. Over time, the show got good word of mouth among high school students and by the time the fifth episode aired, it was regularly winning its time slot and beating Chico and the Man.

It wasn’t a massive hit like Laverne and Shirley, but it established itself enough that the network ordered another dozen shows. There was a pay raise built-in for all the cast members if that happened, so Jack was suddenly being paid $3500 per episode.

He realized he wasn’t going to get home to get his Nova in the immediate future, so he went car shopping. He had to stop in at the bank to see how much money he had and was surprised to find that even after his expenses, he had more than twenty-five thousand dollars.

When the teller passed that amount to him on a slip, he laughed, pushed it back to her and said, “Can you check this again? I don’t think I have that much.”

He walked to the nearest car dealership, which was a Chevy dealer. He’d never considered buying a new car before, but realized that he had the money to walk in and pay cash for whatever car he wanted—even a Corvette, although that would put a serious dent in his funds. This was the first time he realized that at least one of his true childhood dreams was coming true.

Still, he decided to be more responsible and aim a little lower. He wanted to see what the new Novas looked like.

He walked into the showroom dressed in his normal t-shirt, athletic shorts and sandals. He hadn’t bothered to comb his hair, but he had at least brushed his teeth.

His jaw fell open when he saw the 1978 Nova. He walked around it, shaking his head.

“Ain’t she a beaut?” It was a salesman, dressed in classic car salesman garb—white slacks, a red shirt and a sport coat that would have better served as material for a seat cover.

Jack glanced at him, then said, “No, she’s not a beaut. What the hell have they done to the Nova?”

The salesman scoffed. “It’s been designed along the lines of sleek European sedans,” he said, quoting from the sales brochure.

“It’s been designed so that I wouldn’t be caught dead in it,” Jack said.

“Sir,” salesman intoned, “the showroom is for purchasing new cars. Perhaps one of the salesmen who work our used car lot across the street can help you.”

Jack stood up straight. “I get it. I’m a kid. You don’t think I have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, as my Pops says.”

“Not at all, I just think you might be happier shopping in our more budget-minded lot.”

“Based on these tin pieces of crap I see here, you’re right. I prefer a real car. The new Corvette is nice, though.” He nodded in the direction of a prized Corvette in the middle of the showroom.
